Chances are, when your kids come home from school, they're hungry, and in no mood to wait until dinner. That's fine, there's nothing wrong with eating after school snacks as along as they're nutritious. For little kids, this is easy to control if they're home with you, another adult or at an after school program. But teenagers who may spend a few hours at home alone before dinner may be more tempted by potato chips and soda than by healthier snacks.
I know you can't force teenagers to eat healthy, but providing a variety of snacks that are easy to prepare or have some grab-and-go foods on hand instead of the junk foods will improve the odds. Cut up crunchy raw vegetables and keep them in the refrigerator along with with some dip. Stock up on a variety of individual cups of flavored yogurt and choose whole grain baked snack chips and crackers instead of greasy fried chips.
